Space Forks
Thanks to Brian Emling for this. You can go see my contribution at Breakpoint City. Brian’s a good friend and BPC is like the fourth webcomic I ever discovered. An April Fools swap is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, this year I just managed to remember in time.
When you say “Fantasy” in general people hear “Tolkien-Inspired”. Um, I’m not going to subvert that at all in today’s comic spotlight. Here are three “Fantasy” comics:
Boulder and Fleet is a lighthearted comic about a polar bear and bird who are traveling heroes for hire. Fleet’s savvy street smarts ensures they never miss an opportunity, but Boulder’s heart of gold means they never have enough money to keep cake in the cart. Instantly likable, and plenty sweet, if you like SpaceFox, you will like this period.
The next comic is a rare entry in spotlight that comes with a Mature Content warning. (Probably should have put one on Dead Winter last update, sorry if anyone was traumatized) There is actually quite a bit of blood in this, like, mainstream comics circa 1995 level blood. But it works? Whatever, that warning is longer than the description is going to be.
SkullKickers is a straight-up adventure about two roguish antiheroes, along the lines of “Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser” But more madcap. The characters, a gun-toting bald human, and a fairly Tolkein-standard Dwarf kill things for money, and end up getting dragged into an epic struggle for the fate of the universe(s), despite their best efforts otherwise.
Swords and Sausages gets a super-mild sexy content warning, and the website itself warns you before showing you any mild back-to-the-camera nudity, so whatevs. It’s about a pair of wandering bandits who are two silly to be an actual threat to anyone except themselves, and their madcap adventures in a land in the middle of a war they didn’t know was going on.
Anyway, all about the madcap this week. And all about the roguish traveling duos. Next week I’ll be covering fantasy comics with less Tolkien influence.
